Eliot Community Human Services Nan Project Peer Mentor in Lexington, Massachusetts

Description

The NAN Project works to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention programs for young people, using a peer-to-peer model. Eliot is seeking energetic, positive, service-oriented individual to provide support to our peers and be a coordinator with our schools.

The Project emphasizes:

Acknowledging that mental illness is a very serious problem;Accepting mental health challenges as illnesses of the brain, similar to physical ailments, which can be treated;Providing access to treatment for all families and their children.

Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize attending presentations, school introduction meetings, Peer Mentor training, or Professional Developments, as requested. Side projects and other independent work may be maintained as a second priority.

  • Create and present stories about the mental health challenges young people experience in school, and detail the supports and resources used.

  • Explain the ways in which aspects of identity (race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, etc.) impacted their own mental health challenges and recovery during high school.

  • Share story with the purpose and intent of providing hope, reduce the stigma and educate students about mental health challenges and recovery.

  • Prepare multiple versions of Comeback Story for specific populations (for example, middle school students, Spanish speaking students, etc.) and professional development workshops.

  • Support other Peer Mentors and trainees in crafting and editing their Comeback Stories.

  • Work independently on side projects, as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in human services related field preferred.

  • Applicants with training and experience as a Peer Mentor or working with transition age youth, especially around suicide prevention and mental health education are highly preferred. Excellent English verbal and written communication skills necessary (Spanish or second language ability preferred); public speaking experience a plus.

  • Must be well organized and detail oriented, team player and have a sense of humor. Qualified candidates will have basic knowledge and ability to use Excel, Google Drive, Word, ability to use social media (Facebook, Twitter) and be open to learning new programs such as MailChimp, Canva, and Wordpress. Must have a valid driver’s license, access to a car and willingness to travel.

Schedule: Monday - Friday
