MIT Lincoln Laboratory Network Engineer in Lexington, Massachusetts

Our Network Communications and Data Center Team is responsible for the delivery of voice and data network services and the physical infrastructure to support those services. Network services include internet access, the Lincoln External Network (LEN/DMZ) and Lincoln Local Area Network (LLAN) services, and support for research networks. Voice services include dial tone for phones, voicemail, audio conferencing, and the x4111 voice directory. The team also supports the Data Center (known as F1), the physical cable plant, and the technician workforce necessary to provision these services throughout the Laboratory.

Job Description

The Network Engineer IC2 will contribute to a team responsible for the operations of the Laboratory's Enterprise Networks. The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day support and maintenance of production routers, switches, firewalls and other networking devices in use at the Laboratory. This position requires someone with a basic understanding of troubleshooting and analytical skills to assist with the diagnosis and resolution of network issues.

Primary Duties:

Network Engineering

Responsible for network backbone to edge equipment to include but not limited to operating, configuring, upgrading and maintaining routers, switches, firewalls, Application Delivery Controllers, Network Access Control appliances, WiFi controllers and SSL/VPN systems. (Juniper MX, EX & SRX, Palo Alto, F5, FortiNet NAC, Aruba, Pulse Secure) Responsible for maintaining documentation of related network implementations and update changes.

Network Operations Support

Provide second level support resolving Help Desk tickets assigned to the Network Communications Services team.

Project Network Support

Provide network project support to internal teams with the implementation of enterprise and operational service upgrades and new initiatives.

This position is under supervision of the sector manager.

This position will maintain frequent contact with internal department and/or Laboratory user community as well as external vendors to maintain communications related to problem resolution, systems upgrades, services and product research.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Basic understanding TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, OSPF, and BGP protocols.

  • Working knowledge and experience with at least 3 of the following networking technologies:

  • Juniper routing and switching technology.

  • Juniper and Palo Alto firewalls.

  • F5 Application Delivery Controllers.

  • WiFi technology, preferably Aruba Wireless.

  • APC UPS systems

  • Ability to work analytically in a problem-solving environment.

  • Excellent customer service skills (verbal and written).

  • Ability to learn new technologies and disciplines quickly.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with proven ability to work effectively with others, handles multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritizes to meet deadlines

    Preferred:

  • Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or other related scientific or technical discipline.

  • Security+ Certification

  • ITIL v3 Foundations Certification

  • Knowledge of DoD networks and NIST security controls

    Experience Required:

    2 - 5 years of experience of technical IT experience supporting enterprise networks

Additional Information

Other Qualifications:

Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

This role requires participation in an on call schedule as well as a certain degree of flexibility as some work (planned/unplanned) must be done outside of major production hours during pre-scheduled maintenance windows.

Additional Information

This position requires an individual with excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills. The individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment at times with minimal supervision and execute project and administrative tasks with a high degree of quality, while following existing processes and establishing new operational procedures and best practices where necessary. Additionally, the position requires the ability to work with members of other teams and staff to all necessary department and organizational goals.
