Shire Network Solution Engineer in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Network Solutions Engineer provides expertise in data and voice communications and is responsible for the design, implementation, and delivery of effective and secure network systems, infrastructure and related technologies. In addition, this individual has broad knowledge of information technology at large, with a firm understanding of related disciplines and how they interoperate with network hardware and software devices. The Network Solutions Engineer will be responsible for leading design, implementation, participate in day-to-day operations, and troubleshooting efforts and will be directly accountable for the results. The Network Solutions Engineer’s deep and broad knowledge enables a holistic understanding of the technology environment.

  • Network Solutions Engineer responsible planning, design, implementation and operations of Shire’s Enterprise Network;

  • Strong contributor on large projects to develop and recommend scalable solutions for LAN / WLAN / WAN / Data Center / Cloud services and ensure that initiatives support the corporate vision.

  • Assist in continued maintenance and support of all routers, switches, security devices, and wireless infrastructure

  • Ability to resolve complex problems, design solutions, participate in strategy discussions, and manage technical components of a project

  • Drive technical decisions with set technology standards; update and documentation of design standards

  • Evaluate emerging technology and translate into solutions that solve business problems

  • Accountable for enterprise-wide system performance with regards to networking and the underlying components, primarily Cisco networking (routing, switching, wireless)

  • Proactively collaborate with other technology departments and related business units to increase system efficiencies, document system architecture and define long-term design strategies

  • Analyze business requirements and ensure that solutions meet established networking and company policies and controls.

  • Partner with business owners & application teams to define and enhance technology solutions to meet business, performance, and security requirements

  • Review on an ongoing basis existing networks and systems to recommend process and system improvements, as well as policy changes related to IT networking and system architecture

  • Demonstrate knowledge of applicable industry networking standards, hardware and software controls, and emerging networking and security issues

  • Serves as a key resource to work with various technical teams to diagnose and troubleshoot complex and/or critical issues with networking and system considerations

  • Participate in a weekly on-call rotation among peer network engineering staff; Act as Level 3 escalation point for Priority 1 incidents

  • Responds to and appropriately addresses support calls, incidents, and requests related to the network and security infrastructure

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years supporting large scale enterprise networks

  • CCNP or comparable level of experience

  • Experience with Cisco switching and routing technologies

  • Experience with Cisco ASA Firewall, VPN, WLANs and ISE technologies

  • Expert level knowledge of Cisco Routing (BGP, EIGRP and OSPF)

  • SDWAN, MPLS and Internet routing experience

  • Strong understanding of VPN (site to site, remote access client, IPSec, IKE, tunnel modes, SSL, Tunnels between Firewalls) with broad troubleshooting experience

  • Experience with O365 and Azure

  • Experience planning and designing with Palo Alto Firewall infrastructure in an enterprise environment

  • Ability to identify and recommend network changes to improve efficiency and lower costs

  • Ability to work independently and with a team to support corporate network and projects

  • Network project ownership, leadership and status reporting as needed

  • Cisco video conferencing experience a plus

  • Solar Winds experience a plus

  • Knowledge of Cisco Call Manager a plus

  • Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Engineering, Computer Science or 8 years of relevant experience

Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Demonstrate in depth knowledge to configure, operated and troubleshoot Palo Alto Firewalls, Cisco routers, Cisco Identity Services Engine F5, ASA firewalls, Catalyst and Nexus switches, IPS (Sourcefire), LanCope, FireEye and Splunk

  • Expert Level using TCPDUMP and Network Sniffers for Advanced troubleshooting

  • Assess and update legacy network components and refresh device configurations regularly; Understand and support design changes and planned upgrades to network infrastructure in a variety of campus environments

  • Develop a solid understanding of Shire business and technologies needed to support them

  • Serves as a key resource to work with various technical teams to diagnose and troubleshoot complex and/or critical issues with networking and system considerations

  • Work compatibly with peer network engineers and other IT operations staff members to understand business requirements and generate effective technical solutions

  • Utilize company change/incident management systems, project management tools and other network tools and technologies as required and subject to change

  • Create and maintain technical documentation including operational procedures, confirmation templates, runbooks, reference materials, disaster recovery plans, and training documentation.
