Job Profile Summary

​This role focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education to individuals within the organization. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Associate Safety related duties: Prevents workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education for employees. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. An entry level role that applies broad theoretical job knowledge typically obtained through advanced education. May require the following proficiency: work is closely supervised, problems faced are not typically difficult or complex, and explains facts, policies and practices related to job area.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for shift operations and overall direction and supervision of all Public Safety officers falling within their perspective shifts. This position has shift oversight for the day-to-day protection and security of hospital assets and information as well as the safety of all persons on hospital property. Public Safety officers conduct proactive patrols of all hospital buildings and grounds: preventing fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry, and bodily harm to patients, visitors, and staff. Public Safety officers serve as immediate and first responders to crisis situations on a daily basis, and document all safety and security incidents in accordance with department policies and procedures.

This position could have additional responsibilities assigned at the direction of department leadership.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications :

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Five (5) years of experience in healthcare Public Safety/Security.

  3. Valid state issued driver’s license with at least 1 year of driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent.

  2. Graduate of an approved law enforcement training program or Police Academy.

  3. Five (3) years of related experience as a sworn police officer.

  4. Security or First Responder certifications such as CPR/AED, CPI NCI, AVADE, MOAB, MDTS, Stop the Bleed, Nasal Naloxone Certifications, and Hazmat.

Duties and Responsibilities : The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Responsible for maintaining a positive, courteous, professional image through daily actions, attitudes, general conduct, and interactions with others, which promotes trust and a sense of protections and well-being. Provide positive customer and patients orientated services.

  2. Supervise and direct the efforts of the Public Safety officers assigned to the shift to accomplish the job on a daily basis. Manage problems that may arise during the shift. Maintain open lines of communications with the Patient Safety Manager, Facilities Manager, Administrative Nursing Supervisor, and AOC.

  3. Ensure problems or changes in procedures are communicated to the Public Safety staff.

  4. Assist in the proper and thorough training of all assigned Public Safety Officers, through initial shift orientation, the use of a training checklist, regular retraining, and cross training when applicable.

  5. Review all incident reports that occur during the assigned shift and ensure all public safety reports are accurate, complete, and delivered to the Public Safety Manager. Provide any follow-up actions when needed.

  6. Ensure the site is staffed and shifts are covered with properly trained officers. Communicate any problems to the Public Safety Manager.

  7. Schedule replacement Public Safety Officers for the shift when a Public Safety Officer fails to report for a shift. Prior to incurring overtime, or if unable to contact replacement officer(s), contact the Public Safety Manager.

  8. Conduct roll call prior to every shift ensuring scheduled officers are present and in compliance with uniform and grooming standards.

  9. Pass on information to Public Safety Officers on shift concerning events, training, changes in policies and procedures. Follow-up information gathering requirements from shift personnel.

  10. Review all policies, post orders on a routine basis for updates and changes that may be required. Ensure all personnel assigned to their shift adhere to all applicable policies and procedures.

  11. Apply disciplinary procedures as established by the Public Safety Manager to all Public Safety officers as required. It is important for the shift supervisors to be knowledgeable, fair, firm, tactful, decisive, and confident in handling breaches of Hospital policies. Ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and talk to all partied involved when warranted. Prepare and submit a completed report/counseling statement to the Public Safety Manager. If assistance is needed in handling the matter and/or disciplinary action is recommended, contact the Public Safety Manager.

  12. Responsible for enforcing Hospital parking policies, traffic control and providing assistance when needed.

  13. Responsible for following Universal Precautions and prescribed infection control techniques.

  14. Responsible for maintaining and promoting a safe and professional work area and participating in emergency drills according to established policies.

  15. Responsible for attending Hospital training as required. Perform required/requested Patient Compliance Searches as directed by the medical staff.

  16. Provide appropriate Patient Watch Care for all patients under a “section 12” or “Safety watch” as directed by Medical staff.

  17. Assist in the appropriate physical restraint of patients as directed by the medical staff.

  18. Responsible for performing other duties as directed or assigned.

  19. Report all system problems to the appropriate department in a timely manner.

  20. Work varied hours as required or directed by the Public Safety Manager.

  21. Safeguard required compliance with State, Federal and CMS regulations as well as hospital policies.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Frequent standing and walking with the ability to stand and/or walk for eight (8) hours.

  2. Climb multiple flights of stairs.

  3. Lift fifty (50) pounds alone.

  4. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves or eye protection as required.

  5. Some exposure to the elements during regular rounds.

  6. Ability to work long, irregular, and odd hours required. Position may also require unanticipated overtime and hold overs to maintain minimum staffing levels from time to time.

  7. Possibility of injury due to eviction of unauthorized persons, restraint of violent patients, etc.

  8. Exposure to various areas containing hazardous material and radioactive substances when performing patrols.

  9. Frequent contact with patients, visitors, and employees.

  10. Ability to work in confined or open environments.

  11. Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

Skills & Abilities:

  1. Completes all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.

  2. Proficient in communicating, reading, and writing in English.

  3. Basic Computer Skills required.

  4. Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.

  5. Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions, and take appropriate action based on the information available.

  6. Physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined above.

  7. Demonstrate emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy, tact, poise, self- confidence, and positivity (devoid of negative remarks).

  8. Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous, and disciplined.

  9. Ability to become licensed as a Special State Police Officer.
