Job Description:


Under the general supervision of the Peri-Operative Nurse Manager, is responsible for seeing patients for Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) appointments or performing telephonic interview, if appropriate, for patients scheduled for surgery prior to date of surgery for a pre-admission, medical, medication history, and review for appropriate lab, x-ray and/or other orders. Is responsible for implementing the policies and procedures of the Surgery Department to ensure the appropriateness of care for all patients.


  • Obtains Full nursing assessment and evaluation, retrieves records as indicated. Responsible for daily review of requests, faxes, and completed clearances.

  • Responds to telephone inquiries promptly, screens calls, and provides information to patients and staff as needed.

  • Responsible for follow up of laboratory and other tests obtained during the perioperative period in collaboration with the NP’s.

  • Participates in the development and evaluation of pre-admit testing practice guidelines

  • Assists with the provision of surgical care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.

  • Establish collaborative relationships with key constituencies, both internal and external. Effectively build strong relationships and networks to deliver upon organizational and department goals.

  • Promote and model teamwork within and between departments. Work collaboratively with other departments.

  • Maintains an inclusive workplace, maximizes contributions of all stakeholders

  • Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • Holds daily huddles as required

  • Adheres to standard precautions.

  • Participates in quality and process improvement activities to improve patient care and/or related systems

  • Identifies self-learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.

  • Provides leadership that supports hospital and departmental policies and goals, and influences change in the healthcare delivery system.

  • Drafting and maintaining policies and protocols related to the perioperative patient

  • Provides and supports the provision of pre admission testing services with a commitment to excellence in patient experience.

Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.

Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.

May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor.

The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control. A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description. Also identified is the protective gear that is available.

  • Registered Nurse licensed in MA –BSN preferred

  • Minimum Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of Surgical services experience

  • Current CPR


  • Able to utilize MS word products (Word, Excel etc.), effectively.

  • Outstanding communication skills (written/oral/presentation)

  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment; ability to multi-task

  • Able to maintain a collegial and professional relationship intra/interdepartmentally and amongst other care disciplines.

  • Meditech experience preferred
