Tufts Medicine Lowell General Hospital is seeking an experienced Per Diem Bariatric Behavioral Therapist at Center for Weight Management.

Job Overview

This position guides individuals on their weight loss journey by providing psychological support to patients before and after bariatric surgery. This role involves conducting assessments, developing personalized behavior modification plans, and facilitating coping strategies. Addresses emotional factors, eating behaviors, and body image issues, helping patients achieve long-term success. Counsels patients to adopt healthier habits, manage stress, and navigate challenges. Promotes sustainable lifestyle changes and ensuring patients' psychological well-being, contributing to improved post-operative outcomes and enhanced overall quality of life for those seeking weight loss solutions.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications :

  1. Master’s or doctoral degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or another related field.

  2. Valid license to practice as a mental health professional such as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.).

  3. Three (3) years of relevant experience in providing behavioral therapy or counseling services.

Preferred Qualifications :

  1. National Bariatric Board Certification through AABC.

Duties and Responsibilities : The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Provides pre-surgical assessment to determine emotional and psychological readiness for Bariatric surgery.

  2. Conducts pre-surgical interviews examining patient’s weight-loss history, mental health history, current mental health status.

  3. Identifies educational needs for the patient pre and postoperative.

  4. Provides the patient with a written plan that is collaborated by the patient and provider.

  5. Performs emotional and psychological evaluations, psycho-education, counseling and written assessments in accordance with the code of ethics described by the American Psychological Association (APA) and American Counseling Association (ACA).

  6. Reviews patient’s health history, initial assessment, nutritional evaluation and psychological interview prior to completing a report.

  7. Participates and is prepared for weekly multidisciplinary meetings.

  8. Collaborates with other disciplines in planning and coordinating patient care including patient treatments and activities to allow for optimal patient progress toward their weight management success.

  9. Provides ongoing counseling support to post-surgical patients.

  10. Facilitates workshops for postoperative patients promoting Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness, using a holistic approach, including cultural, religious, and psychosocial needs of the patient/group.
