Amazon Controls Systems Development Engineer II – Robotic Work Cells , Amazon Robotics (AR) in North Reading, Massachusetts

Amazon Robotics is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated Control Systems Engineer to design safety-relevant controls for robotics systems and industrial equipment. This candidate should be motivated to adapt well-tried design and safety principles and industrial safety standards into dynamic applications. The ideal candidate would have demonstrated experience developing to IEC standards for delivering in automation or robotics, and possess excellent communication skills.

Key job responsibilities

The Control Systems Engineer will be responsible for:

• Designing and implementing software controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment.

• Designing and maintaining interfaces between controls (OT) and IT systems

• Maintaining and developing the architecture design of the industrial electronic system of automation equipment

• Identifying requirements; developing specifications; and implementing, testing, commissioning, qualifying automation solutions.

• Writing verification and validation plans for the safety system.

• Leading and supporting internal resources and external contractors in the development of controls systems and electrical panels.

• Analyzing failure modes of control system, the effect of the failure, and identifying mitigations and diagnostics

• Driving projects to closure; ensuring that systems could be easily be configured, deployed and maintained.

A day in the life

Your day to day responsibilities include interfacing with our internal and external customers to understand project requirements facilitating Robotic system development. You will be responsible for solving system design challenges in order to deliver Amazon’s leading-edge robotics technologies in its fulfillment and transportation networks. You will be working in an environment where time is considered the most precious commodity. You will collaborate across hardware and software development teams to design and deliver safety controls for the robotic work cells. You will work directly with hardware engineers, software engineering, project management, quality, and safety teams to deliver work cells at scale.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

North Reading, MA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • BS / MS Electrical Engineering (or similar field), or comparable experience

  • 6 years of experience in Industrial electrical design and control systems

  • Experience with the design and coding of PLC program that interface with IT systems

  • Hands on PLC program development of multiple PLC brands (structured text a must)

  • Demonstrated experience in component selection and architectural decisions of the entire electrical design of industrial automation equipment

  • Extensive and up-to-date component knowledge of industrial components within the market

  • Demonstrated strong ability to move seamlessly between levels of abstraction – from system to the “nuts and bolts” implementation

  • Demonstrable skills in developing testable systems and applications

  • Solid debugging skills and the ability to diagnose and solve difficult problems in creative, efficient, and effective ways

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience designing controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment

  • Knowledge and hands on experience with E-Plan P8, Allen Bradley Studio, Siemens TIA portal

  • Demonstrated experience with major Robotic systems (ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa)

  • Understanding and knowledge of SCCR, FLA and Thermal load calculations

  • Deep knowledge of using industrial interface protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, IO-Link)

  • Desire to have broad impact in a fast-paced environment

  • Desire to develop deep understanding of the business and end user needs
