Smith College Director of Track & Field/Cross Country in Northampton, Massachusetts

NORTHAMPTON - SEE WEBSITE FOR FULL JOB DESCRIPTION - Director of Track & Field & Cross Country/Head Coach of Track & Field Job Description Manage and oversee all facets of the Smith Track and Field and Cross- Country programs. Serve as primary coach for indoor/outdoor Track and Field. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: administration, budget management, alumni stewardship, recruiting, scheduling of competitions, meet management, including hiring officials, team travel, weekly practice sessions, advising of students, and compliance with NCAA and conference rules and regulations. In addition, this position will include teaching responsibilities and instruction in the Exercise and Sport Science Department. Additional responsibilities may include department wide duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Master\'s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 3-5 years relevant coaching experience or an equivalent combination of intercollegiate playing and/or coaching experience. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications Preference given to candidates with prior successful collegiate head coaching and collegiate teaching experience. Skills Teach and lead student-athletes including a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse, academically selective student population. Knowledge of track and field skills, strategies, and teaching progressions. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; good judgment, discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Computer skills include word processing, database management, and email communication. Essential Functions Sport Operations and Instruction (50%) Leads a high-quality varsity program(s) that is competitively challenging, well organized and administered, based on sound coaching techniques and instructional strategies and has a positive retention rate. Oversight of all administrative aspects of the operation of a collegiate track and field and cross-country athletic program(s). This includes but is not limited to developing budgets, defining expenses, on-going budget management, prompt reconciliation of team-related expense reports, appropriate organizational duties affiliated with facility usage, staff appointment, supervision and performance evaluation, practice planning and equipment management procedures. In conjunction with Assistant or Associate Director of Athletics, define budget needs including equipment, team travel, uniforms and personnel. In collaboration with Director of Athletics-Department Head and/or Assistant or Associate Director of Athletics, as well as other members of the athletic department, assist with fundraising responsibilities including building and maintaining relationships with Alumni through newsletters, phone-a-thons, and departmental Alumni activities. Scheduling home and away contests including working with other host institutions and Smith personnel in event management. Recruit, supervise, mentor and evaluate head cross-country/distance coach and assistant coaches. Recruitment (25%): Recruit prospective scholar-athletes to attend Smith College and who participate on the team. Encourage applications by a diverse group, in support of the Smith mission. Develop an annual recruiting plan, identifying specific outcomes to be achieved.
