Saint-Gobain Fire Competency Manager in NORTHBORO, Massachusetts

Saint-Gobain is looking for an experienced building scientist to join the company’s building science team and lead the fire competency for Saint-Gobain North America. The fire competency manager is responsible for developing the best-in-class fire science expertise necessary to the continued success of the company’s construction products businesses, including the management of a small-scale and large-scale fire testing facility. This is a unique role that also includes the development of building science training programs targeting Saint-Gobain’s workforce, and that benefits from elevated visibility and reach within the global Saint-Gobain organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Saint-Gobain North America’s fire expertise:

  • Identify the needs of all the Saint-Gobain North America construction product businesses and establish a coherent product and system fire performance competency development strategy inclusive of small-scale and large-scale testing, theoretical and numerical capabilities, and leveraging collaborations with external expertise (e.g., national or academic labs). Ensure alignment with key stakeholders and drive team to execute on the plan.

  • Play an active role in the businesses’ fire performance-related projects – bring expert support or lead projects and ensure successful completion.

  • Identify system solution development opportunities within or across businesses – defend idea, obtain buy-in, and drive execution.

  • Collaborate with Saint-Gobain’s fire competency teams in other countries and contribute to the development of an internal community that establishes and shares technical knowledge and best practices on lab safety and efficiency.

  • Lead the development of building science training programs geared towards Saint-Gobain North American workforce:

  • Collect internal building science competency development needs from Saint-Gobain North America business functions through interviews & shadowing of business and functional leaders, and individual contributors.

  • Leverage insights generated from interviews & shadowing, competitive benchmarking efforts conducted by other members of the building science team, as well as own expertise and that of building science team and external partners to develop the strategy and tactics for building science competency development programs.

  • Lead the development of competency development programs which entails the orchestration of internal and external expertise to generate and vet technical content, and knowledge acquisition evaluations.

  • Leverage team to deliver on key aspects such as the selection, deployment and maintenance of a learning management platform, and the management of the training programs logistical aspects.

  • Stay abreast of relevant codes, standards, and market trends, and utilize/disseminate knowledge.

  • Hire and develop research engineering, lab operations and training program staff, and drive a culture where safety comes first.

  • Actively manage project portfolio in collaboration with businesses – establish priorities and resource projects accordingly. Manage budget within scope of responsibility.

  • Contribute to overall building science team strategy.

  • Develop self and team to fullest potential.

  • Bachelor of Science with 18+ years of experience, or Master of Science with 13+ years of experience, or PhD with 9+ years of experience.

  • Degree(s) in architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, material science, fire protection engineering or related fields.

  • 7+ years of experience in the building construction material industry with at least 4 in an R&D capacity.

  • 5+ years directly managing teams.

  • 3+ years of experience in relation with fire safety, fire testing or fire-resistant products.

  • Up to 20 % travel.

  • Knowledge of the residential and commercial building construction business.

  • Strong knowledge of construction and building science concepts (fire, IEQ, IAQ, hygrothermal transfer, waterproofing, durability).

  • Knowledge of ICC code requirements related to fire safety, fire testing standards and practical test methods, for both residential and commercial markets.

  • Strong analytical thinking skills, and ability to pragmatically extract value from complex information and large data sets.

  • Ability to conduct rigorous and detailed analyses without losing sight of the big picture, appropriately make tradeoffs, prioritize work, and execute.

  • Able to quickly change plan / pivot when relevant.

  • Never-ending desire to learn and grow.

  • Ability to synthesize and communicate approach and results in a compelling manner for both highly technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to effectively lead cross-functional teams by managing (either directly or indirectly) others to execute and deliver project objectives, and to transform ambiguity into clear directions for team.

  • An understanding of pedagogical concepts is a plus.
