Saint-Gobain Principal R&D Structural Engineer - CertainTeed Platforms in NORTHBORO, Massachusetts

CertainTeed is looking for a licensed Structural Engineer (PE) to join our CT Platforms R&D team. In this role, you will help design and analyze prefabricated buildings and systems, as well as develop and launch new products and processes to improve the sustainability, performance, and appeal of residential and occasionally non-residential buildings.

The Principal R&D Structural Engineer is part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts in building physics, engineering, materials science, industrial design, and architecture that focuses on early-stage development of new system-based solutions for the building industry. This is accomplished through product and process research and development, specializing in new markets, advanced materials, and new construction techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Design, evaluate, and improve upon residential building structural systems.

  • Leading the design and building of both small- and large-scale prototypes of new building products, systems, and processes to show to both internal and external customers for feedback to iterate on solutions. Knowing that innovation is an iterative process, you will need to stay open-minded about what the right product is, seeking to learn as much from what does not work as from what does.

  • Proposing innovative technologies for the building industry.

  • Developing and documenting product designs, construction details, and installation processes.

  • Reviewing and preparing calculations, drawing sets, 3D BIM (Building Information Modeling) models, and shop drawings to support the needs of a growing Offsite Solutions business.

  • Interfacing with consulting engineers, builders, developers, architects, and manufacturing partners for the design and production of panelized walls, roofs, and floors.

  • Supporting product management in identifying new opportunities and developing solutions to meet customer needs.

  • Documenting work through preparing and reviewing reports, presentations, and patent filings.

  • Mentoring both technical and non-technical members on building practices and code requirements.

Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of residential building construction practices, IRC and IBC building codes, means and methods, materials, industry standards and hands on experience.

  • Deep understanding of wood-framed and timber-framed construction and industry standards.

  • Residential structural engineering experience, including single-family detached homes, townhomes, and multi-family residential construction.

  • Curious, open-minded, pragmatic, and creative problem-solving abilities with a hands-on approach to design.

  • Knowledge of prototyping at multiple scales, including being comfortable working safely with power tools.

  • Experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, etc.) and/or 3D BIM software packages (Revit, Cadwork, Vertex BD, etc.).

  • Knowledge of building science concepts (IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality), IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), hygrothermal transfer, waterproofing, durability) is a plus.

  • Experience applying building industry standards (including ASTM, NFPA, ICC) is a plus.

  • Knowledge of sustainable building practices and certifications like Energy Star, Zero Energy Ready Home Program, or Passive House (Phius) a plus.

  • Strong project management experience.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and ability to adjust style and content to the audience.

  • Customer-centric, self-driven, and entrepreneurial.

  • Decisive, action-oriented attitude; ability to leverage data to make decisions.

BS with 10 -15 years, MS with 5-10 years or PhD with 3 to 5 years experience- with degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building & Construction Technology, Building Science, or related fields
