Senior Research Engineer I - Plasma Engineering and Surface Modification

Position Description

Job Summary

The Surfaces and Polymeric Materials team works closely with Saint Gobain’s various business units to solve problems, develop new materials and products, and improve manufacturing processes to support the development of innovative products for various Saint-Gobain businesses. The candidate will be expected to lead R&D projects in areas of surface sciences with a specific focus on the surface modification of polymers and particles using different plasma systems and various dry and wet coating techniques to introduce desired characteristics at the surfaces of different substrates. The candidate will spend most of his/her time at designing experiments, performing laboratory work, analyzing/presenting data in written and oral format, and closely working with the rest of the team and business units in the field of Polymeric Materials Development. The candidate will give direction to junior engineers, technicians and other participants during experiments at lab, pilot, & large industrial scales.

  • Carry out role as primary project investigator for 3-5 projects.

  • Recommend innovative project initiatives consistent with customer needs.

  • Develop the surface science competencies in line with Saint-Gobain businesses, which includes proposing lab capability improvements in the field of surface modification and characterization

  • Communicate end results clearly to a large, diverse organization and stakeholders. Holds team members to the same expectation.

  • Ensure that intellectual property is captured and protected through proper procedures.

  • Participate in technical conferences, author appropriate articles/reports and be active in professional societies.

  • Continually champion efforts to drive HSE and environmental consciousness in the organization.


  • Utilizes broad technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, and process performance.

  • Stays aware of new technology applications and competitive uses of the same in work with materials, products, and processes. Develops new knowledge and applies this to personal research/products.

  • Delivers milestones on time within budget to meet customer objectives and continuously document work via written reports.

  • Demonstrates open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility.

  • Establishes network across center, BUs and other R&D centers to leverage R&D capabilities for expanded applications.

  • Able to share technical knowledge with people with all kind of backgrounds, from experts to non-technical personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering or other related disciplines.

  • Experience with surface modification via plasma treatment is required.

  • Experience with several surface characterization techniques (ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM, AFM, TOF-SIMS…) is required

  • Experience in polymers and soft matters is strongly preferred.

  • Industrial Internship or R&D experience with formulation/dispersion, plasma, and wet and dry coating (e.g. PECVD) is preferred.

  • Experience with process automation and/or control is a plus.
