Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston Cataract Patient Counselor in Plymouth, Massachusetts

This position is full time, Monday through Friday.  4 days per week onsite and 1 day remote possible. The location is open to Plymouth, Waltham, or Boston.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Vice President of Operations.  Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to, the generation of new leads, patient phone screenings, and scheduling appointments.  The Patient Counselor will be responsible for educating patients on technology and procedures through Zoom or in-office consultations. The Cataract Surgical Counselor interacts with the following programs: Cataract Surgery, specifically focused on Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) Intraocular Lens (IOL) and may play a role in other premium IOL’s, Collagen Crosslinking, and various out-of-pocket surgeries.

Key Requirements:

  • Answer phone inquiries in an efficient and effective manner utilizing phone scripts.

  • Explain the LAL process to help patients to realize their lifestyle goals and guide them through a decision-making process.

  • Conduct patient consultations via Zoom or in-office with emphasis on converting patients to surgery.

  • Discuss benefits and costs of non-covered benefits with patients. Secure any out-of-pocket financial requirements from the patient.

  • Counsel patients on financing options with CareCredit and provide Billing and Finance Departments with the appropriate paperwork.

  • Work closely with MD clinical teams, providers, Optometry administrative staff to ensure concierge service to the LAL patient, and proper scheduling of both the surgery date, post operative visits and LDD treatments.

  • Make confirmation and reminder calls. Follow-up calls from patient consultations.

  • Assist with the preparation for and attend LAL seminars and events and attends as required.

  • Responsible for tracking personal conversion rates on a monthly basis.

  • Maintain a professional relationship with referring and co-managing doctor’s offices.

  • Performs related job duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Previous ophthalmology or healthcare experience required; COA preferred.

  • Well organized and pays attention to detail.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time quickly and accurately.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to work closely and effectively with doctors, clinic staff and understanding patient needs.

  • Ability to remain personable and empathetic with the patient’s needs and concerns.

  • Ability to work independently “and” as a valued member of the team.

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients and practice active listening.

  • Ability to follow established protocols.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in job assignments.

  • Word processing, excel spreadsheets, and Computer skills.

  • Demonstrates a professional manner in the work setting.

  • Maintains an excellent attendance record, beginning work and end work on time, and minimizes personal interruptions while at work.

  • Maintains an up–to–date knowledge of essential job functions.

  • Maintains a professional and polished appearance. Wear assigned OCB Blazer and display name tag.

  • Maintains a high level of professionalism. 

  • Maintains a positive working relationship with doctors, management, employees, and patients.

  • Polished presentation and exceptional listening skills with the ability to maneuver around obstacles and challenges.
