Job Description:

Position Summary: To provide care of patients in all aspects of Cardiac Pulmonary Rehab and Cardiac Stress Testing including Exercise Treadmill tests, stress echoes, pharmacologic stress echoes, ergonomic bicycle tests, nuclear treadmill tests, and pharmacologic nuclear stress tests.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This position will be required to cross-cover both Cardiac Rehab and Cardiology Exercise Testing per departmental needs

  • Oversees and supervises exercise sessions, exercise stress tests, pharmacologic stress tests, nuclear stress test, stress echoes and Dobutamine Stress Echoes while monitoring participants for inappropriate responses to exercise/abnormal tests by evaluating symptoms, vital signs, 12 lead EKG and/or telemetry.

  • Obtains medical history, examines patient, and determines the clinical utility of the study, pre-test, probability, indications and contraindications of the test. Utilizes chart/computerized medical record reporting system to obtain previous test results to maximize the safety of the exercise/pharmaceutical/pacing study. Identifies high-risk patients by history and examination to determine who may be at excessive risk for the procedure. Determines the appropriateness of selected pharmacologic studies

  • Develops and adjusts individual exercise prescription in accordance with graded exercise testing, patient response to exercise, and physician recommendations on a regular basis.

  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgment when directing the stress testing and during patient care. Observes the patient and monitors symptoms, electrocardiographic and hemodynamic responses to exercise/pharmacologic/pacing stress and into recovery. Ensures that a complete, informative and safe examination is performed, and that an accurate test report is prepared.

  • Immediately reports any new, changing and/or significant patient conditions (dysrhythmias, abnormal blood pressure responses, change in participants’ status, etc.) to the patient’s physician or physician designee

  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and observational skills needed to effectively identify appropriate psychosocial adaptation to illness and/or the presence of psychopathology (e.g., depression, anger, excessive anxiety, etc.).

  • Assists in the overall conduct of the department, including assisting with scheduling, maintaining supplies and equipmentAids in guidance of stress technologist and students.

  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with team members about individual patient findings or concerns and about departmental improvement issues.

  • Effectively applies knowledge of exercise science to a population with cardiovascular and/or pulmonary disease and other potential co-morbidities.

  • Assesses patients’ risk factors that are modifiable and demonstrates ability to offer support and strategies to aid patient in successful therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC).

  • Initiates ACLS measures and/or emergency care according to policy.

  • Participates in emergency drills and mock codes on a routine basis.

  • Keeps current in the field of Exercise Physiology through journals, in-services and conferences.

  • Maintains competency in all areas of Cardiac Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Stress Testing

Education/Experience Required:

  • Master's, Doctoral (Sc.D., Ph.D., Ed.D) degree in Exercise Science, Allied Health Sciences or equivalent preferred.

  • Certificate Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support required.

  • 1-3-year related work experience preferred Basic knowledge of physiology/pathology as it related to cardiac pulmonary exercise and cardiac stress testing with a good understanding of principles and techniques of clinical exercise testing.

  • Knowledgeable in pathophysiology of pulmonary and heart disease, new information and current trends in clinical cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology.

  • Knowledgeable in general human physiology and pathophysiology.

  • Knowledge of pharmacy as it relates to cardiac medications and the potential effects on exercise/pharmacologic testing.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
