Job Description:

The Clinical Nurse Educator is a leader of the discipline of nursing and provides the professional practice expertise that supports the novice nurse in achieving clinical excellence through delivery of evidence-based nursing practice. In partnership with members of the nursing leadership team, she/he is responsible to represent the voice of nursing through consistent translation of the department’s mission, vision, and values across all area, and contribute to the successful transition of the novice nurse to competent bedside clinician.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Clinical Inquiry

  1. Supports educational needs of nursing staff with specific focus on new graduate and novice nurses practicing at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth

  2. Nurtures the novice nurse with adherence to Nurse Residency Program philosophy, objectives, goals and mission

  3. Facilitate the smooth transition of novice nurse to the Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth model of professional nursing practice

  4. Assist with coordinating classes, skills labs, specialty courses, group sessions and other activities that constitute the program curriculum based on adult learning principles

  5. Utilize various teaching strategies, as appropriate to support a successful clinical learning experience

  6. Address practice issues in collaboration with nursing leadership when assistance is needed to facilitate resolution

  7. Serve as a resource for interpretation and integration of current policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines into practice

  8. Collaborates with Professional Practice to develop and implement orientation, competency, continuing education and in-service programs that support safe practice

Mentor

  1. Acts as an effective role model and resource for the nursing staff

  2. Observe and evaluate residents practice in collaboration with preceptor and unit-based educator

  3. Provide leadership to preceptors and other educators in evaluating clinical performance against practice standards

  4. Provide feedback on performance to the learner that is specific, timely, meaningful and candid

  5. Provide emotional support to the novice nurse using the concepts associated with Reality Shock and Novice to Expert Theories.

Leadership

  1. Functions as a liaison between disciplines and departments in assuring a smoothly coordinated residency program, including facilitating meetings, identifying and responding to daily problems, communicating and collaborating with different members of the care team.

  2. Identifies factors that affect the resident’s ability to learn and fulfill the job responsibilities, progression within the program, and retention

  3. Communicates recommendations as needed to the preceptor, unit- based educator or manager as appropriate

  4. Acts in a leadership role for the Nurse Residency Program, articulating issues and reporting program needs to the Director of Professional Practice

  5. Participate in Professional Practice Department meeting as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Two years of progressively responsible education and/or leadership experience

  • Five years acute care nursing experience with 2 of the 5 preferably in practice area directly related to role assignment.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • Current RN licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • AHA BLS & ACLS certification

  • Educator certification (NPD/RN-BC) required within one year of hire or as soon as eligible per national standards.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs. and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
