State of Massachusetts Direct Care Worker II in Rutland, Massachusetts

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) seeks a caring and compassionate applicant for the role of DIRECT CARE WORKER II (DCW II). The DCW II position is a shift supervisor position that provides oversight and direct services to individuals with developmental disabilities. The position is an excellent opportunity, including for potential candidates who are interested in furthering their career within the Department of Developmental Services, as it affords valuable work experience to build one’s foundation for professional development and advancement. * *Duties and Responsibilities(these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): - Assist individuals in meeting his/her personal care and nutritional needs - Assist and support individuals in making choices in his/her life - Maintain individuals’ rights by complying with applicable laws and regulations - Provide leisure activities; may drive individuals to work, appointments, and to recreational Activities - Provide daily supervision and training to Direct Care Worker I staff to ensure that they are acting as advocates for the individuals and demonstrate respect and positive regard for individuals with developmental disabilities - Oversee, as the shift supervisor, the health and safety of the individuals by administering medications - Communicate with appropriate medical and health care providers regarding health concerns and accompany individuals to various appointments as necessary. * * Preferred Qualifications: - Knowledge of practices and procedures necessary to assure the health and safety of individuals, including evacuation procedures. - Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the activities of others. - Ability to give written or oral instructions in a clear and understandable manner. * *Special Requirements: Must possess current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. * *This home will be deemed a “Turning 22” home. Massachusetts Law Chapter 688, “Turning 22” Law (Chapter 71b, Section 12c) A disabled person who has been receiving special education shall be eligible, subject to appropriation, upon graduation from high school or upon attaining the age of twenty-two, whichever occurs first, to receive habilitative services. The education authority which is responsible for the education of a person with a disability shall, with the consent of such person or his parent or guardian, at least two years before such person attains the age of twenty-two or at least two years before such person’s graduation, whichever first occurs, determine whether such person may need continuing habilitative services and notify the bureaus of transitional planning of the name an address of such person, the record of the special education services being provided to such person, and the expected ate of termination of such services. Individuals can be determined eligible for adult services through DDS if they have significant limitations in adaptive functioning and one or more of the following diagnoses: – Intellectual Disability. – Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). – Prader-Willi Syndrome. – Smith-Magenis. In order to receive services at age 22 or later, adult eligibility must be completed, even if the individual was determined eligible for children’s services. It is best to begin the adult eligibility process around age 18 in order to provide maximum planning time for adult services. Adult services do not begin prior to age 22. DDS has provided supports to children with autism and adults with autism who met the department’s eligibility criteria for intellectual disability. In 2010, the legislature established an Autism Commission to investigate the needs of individuals with ASD, including those who did not meet the criteria for DDS as related to intellectual disability. After extensive study, the Autism Commission developed a comprehensive report that identified priorities, findings and recommendations. // /Please Note/: This position is located in the Templeton Community Services Program in Rutland, MA. Schedule: 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM Days Off:Sunday/Monday This is a 24 hour/ 7 days a week staff position. The Department of Developmental Services requires employees in this position to be able to perform mandatory overtime when circumstances dictate the need. Substitutions: An Associates degree or higher with a major in a human services field, including sociology, special education, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or other related field may be substituted for the required experience.
