Pelican Products Process Engineer in South Deerfield, Massachusetts
Responsible for the control of equipment and the processing of materials to produce consistent yield and quality injection molded products. Responsible for repair and changes to existing tooling, and introduction of new tooling, machinery, equipment, and processing technologies and makes recommendations to ensure optimum manufacturability, efficiency and cost-savings.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Assists in the introduction of new products and equipment to production and provides the technical expertise to continuously improve the existing manufacturing process.
Manages tooling projects, including new procurement and maintenance, from conception through production start-up, which includes working with tooling suppliers on schedules and project implementation.
Participates in tooling design reviews, and recommends and implements tooling, automation, and process enhancement on existing systems.
Ensures tooling, press, and support-equipment capacity is adequate to meet production demands and product performance specification
Works closely with production planning and quality departments to stay in tune with scheduling requirements and improves quality of plastic components.
Keeps up to date with advances in technologies and innovations in tooling, machinery and robotics.
Reduces production waste during molding process by reducing scrap and cycle times.
Develops an understanding of the process variables for the presses—inputs, machine processes and outputs. Assesses the levels of control, severity of their impact, develops a plan and implements the solutions.
Troubleshoots and resolves complex production problems and ensures that all new materials and molds undergo proper testing, including first article testing, and authorizing their release to production.
Reviews parts and first samples and make recommendations to improve production and molding conditions.
Provides support for injection molding technical team to help maintain the controls set up. Works closely with production management to identify areas for improvement, develops and provides training as needed.
Performs routine audits to assure proper systems performance and maintenance.
Communicates with tooling and molding vendors as needed.
Follows company policies and practices as outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or applicable employment agreement. Follows safety guidelines and procedures in accordance to the job.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Minimum of Associate’s degree in Engineering or other Technical area
3 to 5 years’ experience in Tooling, Process or Manufacturing Engineering, with primary focus in Injection Molding and Plastics
Working knowledge of plastic injection molding techniques and procedures, including mold design, mold set-ups, and support equipment.
Prefer e xperience working with larger tonnage machines (>900 tonnes), servo robots and processing polyolefins and engineering resins.
Competency with SPC/SQC, Process Capability Studies and Scientific Molding Techniques required.
Background in Lean/Six Sigma.
Excellent writing and verbal communication and presentation skills.
Excellent knowledge of plant and machine safety.
Must have excellent math skills and the ability to work with measurements and ratios.
Must have the ability to maintain accurate and organized production processing records.
