Baystate Health Associate Chief Nurse in Springfield, Massachusetts

Reporting to the CNE/CNO the ACNO is responsible for maintaining patient operational flow between all admission sources including procedure areas, ambulatory and inpatient services, and is accountable for developing and maintaining systems that maximize patient throughput in the context of excellent clinical care, compassionate care and fiscal responsibility. The ACNO assumes overall responsibility for the planning, priority setting, coordination and evaluation of programs of nursing care, education, and quality improvement for the designated clinical departments. Additionally, responsible for oversight of off-shift hospital operations and communications with AOC in managing off-shift urgent or emergent clinical and admirative issues. The ACNO is responsible for establishing proven methods, evidence-based practice that lead to best in class patient flow/capacity management results. Effective management of human, fiscal, and material resources is inherent in this role responsibility. As a member of the Nursing and Patient Care Services Departments, participates with other key stakeholders in policy development, long range planning and priority setting for the institution as well as the Nursing Department.

The position will work closely with other leadership positions throughout the organization and must have a strong ability to work as a team member and communicate effectively at all levels throughout the organization in order to effect the successful completion of the short and long term objectives of Baystate Health. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of employee engagement, change management, process improvement, diversity as well as the ability to support the organization's mission and operating principles.

  • Leadership and Stewardship: Oversight and responsibility to strategically and tactically enhance, implement and evaluate patient flow/capacity management programs and initiatives. Demonstrated ability to determine key needs, diagnose and address problems, and monitor progress of important initiatives and activities. Demonstrates leadership qualities and is a steward of the organization's goals and objectives. Demonstrated success in establishing, facilitating and realizing learning objectives for the organization. Coordinates the execution of PX strategic work plan, goals and objectives in collaboration with key stakeholders. Creates and maintains an environment in which staff and physicians are actively engaged to enhance quality, safety and patient-centered care. Innovative leader with strong relationship and partnering abilities. Demonstrated background in leadership management; proven ability to assemble and motivate high performing teams. Ability to work with a variety of system leaders to build consensus around patient flow/capacity management and tactics.

  • Advanced Communication Practices: Superior interpersonal communication, presentation skills, master facilitator as well as proven organizational skills. Meets regulary with leadership, physicians and staff to diffuse patient-centered excellence. Assures collaborative communication and promotes a strong teamwork environment by ensuring inclusion of entire team and that all voices are heard.

  • Collaboration: Provides leadership in partnership with Medical Staff Leadership and in collaboration with patients/families, physicans, senior leadership, and managers to promote integration and alignment of strategies with teams across the organization. Charged with creating and fostering a culture of passion and commitment for exemplary patient & family experience through collaborative relationships with key stakeholders

  • Patient Flow/Capacity Management Metrics: In collaboration with the Physician Leaders and Senior Leadership, defines, analyzes, integrates and presents data related to the patient flow in a meaningful way across the system. Continually evaluates progress and identifies and mitigates barriers in order to achieve targeted results. Analyzes and monitors data and other identified key metrics to drive improvement outcomes for patient-centered excellence. Promotes excellence in care through direct interaction, observation, and ongoing evaluation of data, patient outcomes and feedback from other members of the health care team to inform the future of patient flow/capacity management and organizational practices. Integrates patient flow/capacity management data with other metrics including but not limited to Employee Engagement, Culture of Safety and other national benchmarks.

  • Develops an infrastructure and fosters a climate that supports organizational learning, process standardization and cultural change strategies to improve the patient flow/capacity management. Instills a culture of service excellence, ownership and results across the system. Maintains strong working relationships with employees, BH team members and key stakeholders.

  • Accountable for developing annual patient flow/capacity management goals and integration initiatives, and plans with relevant monitoring/measurement tools to identify outcomes. Develops goals and priorities for specific performance targets. Participates in resolving patient complaints as appropriate. Works with leadership, providers and staff to assure positive patient relationships and service excellence.

  • Coaches leaders and staff for improved results and execution of best practices and chosen strategies.

  • Responsible for the oversight and management of the operating and capital budget.

Minimally Required Education:

Bachelor's Degree Nursing

Masters Degree in Nursing

Preferred Education:

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Minimally Required Experience:

10 years of current, directly related experience, in a complex hospital environment and demonstrated proven leadership/managerial experience in patient flow and a proven ability in planning and development of services, project management and leadership.

Skills Competencies:

Must have demonstrated knowledge of Emergency Departments, Patient Flow/Capacity management, a skilled team facilitator, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer and software skills, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to manage complex projects and resources (people, costs, time).

Ability to strategize, plan and implement change.

Ability to understand contractual agreements

Ability to work effectively and role model tenets of outstanding team player and leader.
