The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. * * * *Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (Site Discovery/Risk Reduction/Brownfield and Enforcement) This program runs from June 2024 - October 2024 * * MassDEP PFAS Source Discovery Initiative- Western Region This internship is designed to support MassDEP’s Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) ongoing per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Source Discovery efforts. This is an exciting project which focuses on MassDEP’s investigation of areas impacted by PFAS and identifying potential sources through literature review and analysis of existing data.The goal of the internship is to assist the Western Region’s Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup in identifying potential sources of PFAS by utilizing multiple resources including available scientific literature and data sources (e.g., geological maps of surface and subsurface units and features, principles of surface water and groundwater flow, well construction databases, and existing PFAS data collected by MassDEP and others). Additionally, the selected intern will help in the development of a potential PFAS signature source database as well as identify potential correlations with other known source signatures. The intern also will analyze assessment data, create a final summary report, and help develop materials for environmental education for the public. * *Description of Internship Duties If you want to be a part of the MassDEP’s PFAS Site Discovery group that is helping to protect our local communities and you are a self-motivated independent individual, then this internship is for you. You will research, collect, map, and characterize information from MassDEP’s electronic files and records, coordinate with Geographic Information System (GIS) database personnel and with MassDEP’s internal PFAS task force group, as well as utilize external resources. Duties may include creation of a signature source PFAS database, data analysis and comparison and summarizing findings into a summary report. * * First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. * * Knowledge and skills needed: * Some knowledge of hydrogeology. * Familiarity with reading laboratory reports. * Familiarity with MS Windows, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel, including graphing functions. * Some knowledge of GIS. * Mass Driver’s License and reliable vehicle. * Able to work independently. * Able to collect information and concisely summarize it. * Interests/Major may include but not limited to: Hydrogeology, Natural Resources/Environmental Science, Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, Geology, GIS/Spatial Data Applications, Geography, Chemistry, and/or Public Health Prerequisites Associate or bachelor’s degree (must be enrolled or within one year of graduation) Required * * Cover letter * Resume * * *Comprehensive Benefits When you embark on a career with the Commonwealth, you are offered an outstanding suite of employee benefits that add to the overall value of your compensation package.
