Baystate Health Surgical Technologist Pedi Procedure Unit in Springfield, Massachusetts

Summary:

Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator and RN Service Leads the Surgical Technologist works directly under surgeon/physician guidance to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.

The Surgical Technologist must possess expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique; demonstrate the ability to combine knowledge of human anatomy, the surgical process and procedures including instrumentation and advancing technologies. The surgical technologist will be able to anticipate the needs of the surgeons/physicians by constant attention and assessment of the surgical process and patient condition to promote a safe, expedient, quality surgical outcome. These skills will facilitate the surgeons/physicians performance of minimally invasive, invasive surgical procedures and invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The Surgical Technologist must be able to function proficiently in a variety of surgical specialty services.

The Surgical Technologist provides patient care primarily through service to the physician/ surgeon. The Surgical Technologist is expected to have an understanding of the procedure being performed, anticipate the needs of the surgeon/physician and have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure, while monitoring the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist is accountable for maintaining skills and knowledge to function in commensurate with their assignments and within policies and procedures of the department. This description covers the essential functions of the position. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and/or related duties as assigned after demonstrating competency.

Accountable to and perform duties under the direct, on-site supervision of the registered nurse and or physician when providing delegated patient care tasks. The Endoscopy Technician performs a variety of direct and indirect clinical patient care activities and technical skills in the diagnostic and therapeutic gastro enterology/endoscopy practice setting within the established department policy and procedures.

Performs a variety of functions from decontamination of bio-hazardous material, to cleaning and inspection of instrumentation used for GI procedures. These processes require attention to detail in the visual inspection of instruments and equipment after cleaning and before assembly. Strict adherence to high level disinfection parameters and accurate documentation of parameters associate with the process are required.

Must be knowledgeable in hospital policies and protocols of regulatory bodies such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Public Health (DPH), and Joint Commission (JC).

Job Responsibilities:

1) Participates in staff development and education activities maintaining competencies on an annual basis, in accordance with performance based skills and knowledge requirements.

2) Maintains knowledge and skills in the first scrub role and responsibilities and multitasks within the operative setting.

3) Thinks independently and work under stressful/emergent conditions using positive coping skills.

4) Sets up of the operative setting to facilitate the specific surgical procedure being performed including equipment, instrumentation, lighting and OR table with the ability to adapt the setting for multiple procedures. Recognizes instrumentation discrepancies and is proactive to correct it.

5) Assists in positioning patient for procedure. Communicates needs of patient to nurse, surgeon, or appropriate person when necessary.

6) Demonstrates knowledge in the use of pharmacological agents dispensed to the sterile field with the ability to recognize mixtures, doses, and labels in accordance with policies and procedures.

7) Trouble shoots and maintains endoscopy equipment . Assists with set up and obtaining endoscopy supplies. Maintains room supplies and equipment including ordering and restocking. Performs cleaning and disinfecting of endoscopes, room and equipment.

8) Process specimens in accordance with procedure guidelines.

9) Responds to emergency situations as directed by the nurse and/or physician

10) Applies infection control practices and demonstrates advanced knowledge and application of high level disinfection process.

11) Maintains records for decontamination, disinfection, equipment maintenance and monitors daily compliance

Required Work Experience:

1) Program accredited by Committee on Allied Health Education Association or have completed a structured training program and hold a professional equivalent. New hires will require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
