Baystate Health Sustainability and Energy Coordinator in Springfield, Massachusetts

Baystate’s Facilities Department is responsible for the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of 4,000,000 square feet of facilities throughout western Massachusetts. Our Planning and Design team provides real estate solutions to enable the delivery of state-of-the-art health care. Overseeing design, procurement, and construction management of numerous projects throughout the system. Our Facilities Engineering teams maintain and operate our facilities and critical infrastructure. This includes energy production and distribution and the optimization of the building systems necessary to improve the health of the people in our community.

Summary:

The Sustainability Coordinator will assist with developing, implementing, and tracking best practices to reduce waste and energy consumption at Baystate Health. The Sustainability Coordinator will track Baystate’s greenhouse gas emissions and implement strategies to reduce those emissions. Assist in implementing energy conservation programs and alternative energy opportunities, including battery storage and alternative power production, and track GHG reduction from Cogeneration operations. The Sustainability Coordinator will assist in the development of a climate resilience plan, sustainable food strategies, waste, and energy reduction and recycling programs.

The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for tracking and analyzing all consumables and waste streams across the Baystate Health System. Consumables such as food, electricity, water, natural gas, as well as waste steam including, solid waste, recyclables, and regulated medical waste. The Sustainability Coordinator will coordinate with individuals across the system to put in place a reporting structure to gather and analyze data monthly. The Sustainability Coordinator will analyze data to identify opportunities to reduce Baystate Health’s impact on the environment and develop goals, set targets, create metrics, and track results.

Job Requirements:

1- Track and analyze energy consumption and pursue all available funding (Eversource, National Grid, MAEVIP, Federal Infrastructure Bill, etc.) for EV chargers and energy conservation programs. In addition, perform the application process for any sustainability related rebate or grant programs, e.g., energy, conservation, and electronic recycling rebates.

2- Coordinate with Hospitality to reduce energy consumption and waste. Strengthen the recycling program. Explore opportunities to reduce food waste and develop menu options that include sustainably raised and locally sourced food. Work with all clinical service lines to identify waste reduction and recycling opportunities.

3- Gather monthly data from various sources across the Baystate Health and business partners, including physical plants, utility companies, food services, clinical areas, Waste Disposal Facilities, and other sources. Regularly analyze data and use it to measure the impact of reduction programs. Create a dashboard to illustrate actual vs. targets.

4- Track steam chilled water and electricity production and analyze energy usage against purchased utility power to determine GHG reductions.

5- Present findings, important information, and implementation strategies to leadership and employees Compose an Annual Sustainability Report. Upload data annually to the Practice Green Health Reporting tool.

Required Work Experience:

Six months to one year of sustainability, data or energy related experience

Skills and Competencies:

Intermediate understanding of Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and minimum one-year use of these program

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability related field, Energy Engineering, Earth Science or equivalent experience

Driver’s License
