SWIM LESSON INSTRUCTOR (Seasonal) Position Purpose/Summary This position will be responsible for assuring the safety, well-being and enjoyment of all participants in his/her class. In doing so, the instructor is responsible for teaching these five components; personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games and sports, and rescue through explanation, demonstration, and correcting individuals so that they learn to the best of their ability. Instructors are responsible for the planning, preparation and safety of his or her class. Swim Instructors should make and keep swimming a fun activity. Essential Functions Responsible for safety and well-being of participants in the pool during class. Maintains constant supervision and control of the class at all times Provides encouragement to participants while making corrections of their swim strokes to avoid development of bad habits Ability to get into the water and demonstrate for every class. Enforces all pool rules in a courteous yet firm manner Prepares class session plans, record sheets on each participant, skill evaluations of each participant, communication with the parents and administering and collecting parental evaluations of the class Attends weekly staff meetings and in-service trainings Reports to work 15 minutes before class begins to set up all equipment Cleans up equipment and returns it to its proper location after class Stays on deck to assist lifeguards until all participants have left the pool area Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to decide entry skill level and exit skill level after sessions of all participants Ability to works with parents to determine the best dates and times for swim programs around the scheduled pool times Ability to develop lessons plans according to the class ability, size, and developmental level Determines if the pool environment is acceptable to run a class, this includes; water quality, air temperature, pool temperature, cleanliness and equipment safety Determines class size with regards to swimmers ability Determines whether a child requires a special needs class and communicates it to the Lead Swim Instructor and/or Aquatics Director Ability to stay up to date with the pool schedule and changes class schedule accordingly Needs to have satisfactory stroke knowledge as well as the ability to communicate with swimmers of varying ages and swim skill degrees Ability to use entire pool for class and must demonstrate ability to get in and out of the pool several times Education and Experience Current YMCA or American Red Cross swimming instructor certification Current CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a pool environment
