State of Massachusetts Mental Health Worker III in Taunton State Hospital, Massachusetts

Work Schedule:

2nd shift 2:45 pm - 11:15 pm

Days Off: Monday and Tuesday

Assist professional staff in providing care and treatment for mentally ill clients including psychogeriatric, intermediate care, acute care and all other specialized care psychiatric units. This will include instruction and supervision of patients regarding skills achieved through effective ADL’s.

  1. Provides direct care services daily while instructing and assisting clients in learning the skills of daily living to promote independent ADL functioning.

  2. Provides care to the patients with respect to their needs as defined by the specific age population. Assist in problem identification, planning and teaching.

  3. Serves as patient advocate, ensures that confidentiality and human rights are maintained.

  4. Ensures that the spiritual needs of the patients are met by coordinating with senior staff and/or charge nurse.

  5. Provides care to the patients with consideration of their specific cultural needs.

  6. Counsels patients as indicated by conversing with them on a 1-1 basis using therapeutic communication in order to facilitate a therapeutic environment.

  7. Accompanies patients to various appointments, programs, and treatment areas and assists professional or medical staff as needed.

  8. Participates in activities with patients to include board games, puzzles, ping pong, to provide the patient with opportunities to reduce their “down” time.

  9. Attends daily report at the start of each day. Utilizes information learned in report to provide optimal care to the patients.

  10. In the absence of a higher grade MHW, makes out daily ward assignment shift after consulting the charge nurse. Assignment is made with consideration to acuity, patient and staff safety, and patient needs.

  11. Checks assignment sheet at the start of each shift and accurately performs all duties as assigned.

  12. Responds to off unit behavioral emergencies as assigned.

  13. Provides a clean and safe environment with supervising and assisting ward tidiness to ensure cleanliness.

  14. Provides a safe unit environment by accurately performing patient safety checks, accurately signing patients on and off the unit.

  15. Completes required documentation as assigned, accurately reflecting the patient’s presentation.

  16. Demonstrates responsibility regarding punctuality and attendance to assure staff is available to provide patient care.

  17. Demonstrates knowledge of R&S reduction principles including prevention, de-escalation, and debriefing.

  18. Reads and familiarizes self with new, updated existing protocols and policies in order to provide optimal care.

  19. Reads and familiarizes self with safety tools in order to provide the most effective crisis intervention.

  20. Acts as a role model for subordinate staff while working closely with the charge nurse.

  21. Provides patient with at least one group activity, weekly while giving consideration to the needs of the patients and unit as a whole.

  22. Participates in treatment planning and unit rounds as requested.

  23. In conjunction with the RN, demonstrates the ability to conduct community meetings and leisure group activities.

  24. In the absence of an MHW4 and in conjunction with the RN utilizing appropriate resources plans and provides the patients with special celebrations the throughout the year.

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) is a 45-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model. The hospital is a part of the Southeast Area of the Department of Mental Health which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients’ discharge back to the community. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in providing direct care service to the mentally ill, emotionally or physically handicapped, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in psychology, human services, mental health or retardation may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
