Brandeis University Posse Mentor in Waltham, Massachusetts

Brandeis University is looking for a Posse Mentor. The Brandeis Posse Mentor serves as the primary advisor for a group of 10-12 students who have been selected as Brandeis Posse Scholars. Brandeis Posse Scholars are students from the Atlanta area who are selected for undergraduate admission to Brandeis based on their outstanding leadership skills. Many but not all Scholars are first generation, low-income, or students of color at Brandeis University. The mentor motivates the Posse members to achieve in their academics, and to fully participate in Brandeis University campus life. The mentor works with the Posse members both as a group and as individuals during the first year and sophomore year of college. This is a part time position, approximately 12 hours a week. It is a two-year position. Examples of Key Responsibilities: Designs and leads weekly two-hour meeting with the Scholars. Creates and facilitates these meetings or helps the Scholars create and facilitate the meetings. Meetings should promote academic excellence, campus involvement, and a strong affinity for Brandeis University Responsible for attending and actively contributing to trainings, workshops, and retreats sponsored by Brandeis University and/or by the Posse Foundation. Maintains ongoing contacts with the Dean of Academic Services and Advising at Brandeis and with the Posse Foundation to ensure both are updated about the status of the Posse. Networks with Brandeis University offices to ensure the Posse knows about and takes advantage of campus resources Performs crisis counseling for students who are experiencing difficulty with school or personal problems. Refers students to and collaborates with other advising resources including these found in Academic Services or Student Life Analyzes and assesses student needs. Meets biweekly with each Scholar individually. Establishes and builds relationships, and monitors student progress to maintain continuity of advising relationships in order to meet retention and graduation goals of Brandeis University and the Posse Foundation. Uses a comprehensive strategy that integrates advising in the following areas: academic, financial aid, career/graduate school and personal to support students through their first two years of college Qualifications: BA/BS required, must be a current graduate student Experience working with and motivating high school and/or college students, especially in their academic and social development. Experience working with people from different cultures, races, and economic backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to work as part of a team.
