Job Purpose

Reporting to the US Internal Consultancy Lead, the Principal Consultant will play an important leadership role in helping develop the department to deliver outstanding, value-added results to business unit and functional leaders.

Your primary accountability will be to drive strategic initiatives across National Grid Plc, working on diverse, challenging and interesting problems across strategy, operations, and regulation to drive affordable clean energy transition for all. You will solve complex business problems, manage the project execution and support the organisation stand up business initiatives, and develop and evolve the operating model across our group of companies.

This role has multiple stakeholders, and success will require significant facilitation and coordination skills as well as ability to challenge established thinking and lead discussions where necessary. Your voice and credibility will be important in these debates and your ability to influence and take senior leaders with you will be crucial to your success.

You will enjoy exceptional exposure to the most senior leaders in National Grid Plc, working on the highest priority issues. You will become part of a high calibre team, with excellent opportunities to develop your career at National Grid, starting within the Internal Consultancy team and expanding into other functions and/or operating units.

Much of the work will be executed out of the National Grid US headquarters in Waltham, MA, however, some work will be done out of other offices in Metro Tech or Syracuse. You should expect to travel no more than 10% of the time. Within the current climate, we are expecting working from home to continue into early 2021, with the potential to combine home and office based working for the longer term. There may be occasional trips required to UK headquarters in Warwick.

Key Accountabilities

You will have significant experience across a broad set of general management consultancy skills including:

  • Project definition and execution

  • Assist with development of consulting proposals and Statements of Work

  • Management of project workstreams and corresponding client/customer teams to successfully deliver on assigned efforts

  • Exposure and success across multiple areas of business strategy/improvement, such as:

  • Business unit strategy development (“Where to Play”) and execution (“How to Win”) in large and complex corporate environments

  • Operating model and organisation development/design

  • Business Performance improvement including benchmarking, End-to-end process improvement

  • Program management

  • A diverse set of demonstrated capabilities

  • Strong analytical, presentation and communication skills

  • Comfortable managing through ambiguity; able to break down complex problems into actionable tasks, develop work plans and structure work stream output/deliverables

  • Ability to translate strategy into action and drive measurable sustainable results, not just producing “a study that sits on a shelf”

  • Ability to engage with business leaders and motivate change

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a top-tier college or university

  • Typical candidates will be 1-2 years post-MBA/other relevant advanced degree, and/or have 6-10 years of work experience with a successful track record of solving complex business problems and increasing responsibility

  • At least 4 years of prior management consulting experience is strongly preferred

  • Prior experience in energy is preferred. Experience in “related” industries (e.g. other utilities, construction, engineering, distribution, defense, large business-to-business/industrial equipment) will also be considered a plus

  • Exposure to and success in delivering business strategy and operations improvement projects (e.g., strategy development and execution, operating model design, performance improvement)

  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity; able to quickly break down problems in a structured manner and prioritize required analysis

  • Ability to analyze complex financial and industry data and draw out insights and implications

  • Ability to create simple, powerful, and data-driven written communications

  • Ability to effectively communicate with leaders and build enduring, trust‑based and high-impact relationships with clients to drive change

  • Professional, collaborative, respectful of different perspectives
