Thermo Fisher Scientific Senior Finance Manager, Global Contracts and Business Processes in Waltham, Massachusetts

What will you do?

This finance leader is expected to be a results-driven professional, effective in executing compliant business process roadmaps across a global matrix organization. Strong experience in negotiating, reviewing, administering and interpreting both revenue and expense contracts and various other transactions in the pharmaceutical, biotech, academia and clinical research markets, resulting in top-line growth and margin expansion. Advocate and driver of continuous global business process improvements.

This self-starting professional will work across corporate, group and inter-divisional / intra-divisional areas to ensure that contracts and other documents conform to business, legal and operational needs and are compliant with Company policies and applicable local rules, laws and regulations. This professional should have strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and leadership skills since leveraging both internal and external customers is crucial to both tactical and strategic decision-making. This professional works independently yet is cognizant of various business processes in a cross-functional environment and provides guidance and recommendations to all senior management levels, including both division and group presidents and vice presidents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strong familiarity with, and ability to analyze, various types of quotations, commercial opportunities, third party service providers and non-standard payment requests to maximize top line revenue and achievement of full potential profitability, obtaining the best possible value for the Company.

  • Liaise with, and provide proactive leadership and support to, Division business units (BU) and Finance staff when evaluating offers being prepared for a customer; identify business and legal risks; provide alternative and effectual solutions, as need, attain win-win innovative results related to complex contracts, risk mitigation inquiries and efficient contract review and approval process. Identify risks and methods for mitigating such risks to quotes and proposals to management and legal team. Solid understanding of the basics of commercial sales such as pricing, delivery, and payment terms, as well as, working knowledge of key legal terms including indemnification, insurance and limitation of liability.

  • Advise highest level senior management and partner with Group legal team on contractual risks, liabilities and obligations, ensuring Company and customers' objectives are achieved.

  • Understand and act on revenue-driven priorities for month, quarter and year-end close.

  • Provide robust review of large customer quotes and opportunities; assist in routing and timely approvals according to the Corporate and Divisional Approval Authority Matrices.

  • Lead, develop, mentor and coach Division staff to identify work process flow gaps, drive continuous improvement and standardization, develop best-in-class contract management processes and procedures within the organization, and ensure compliance at each respective site.

  • Initiate creative steps and compliant actions related to standard work process flows involving intra-divisional touch points with internal controls.

  • Enforce adherence to Corporate and Division Approval Authority Matrix, Corporate Accounting Policy and Corporate Contract Review and Approval Policy. Monitor division and/or business unit compliance with Thermo Fisher's policies, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, develop corrective actions and actively train team members.

  • Abide by highest ethical standards in own actions and decision making, ensuring both internal and external compliance with policy, regulatory, global trade compliance and export control and related law and regulations.

  • Propose alternative approaches and modifications to contract terms with the business teams and Group legal team.

  • Review and provide support to higher level, high dollar requests for quotation (RFQ), requests for proposal (RFP) and the like.

How will you get here?

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting, finance, or pre-law.

  • MBA a plus

  • Strong understanding of contracts and sales document terms to drive and close complex revenue and expense matters, and the ability to effectively partner with the organization teams, including the Group legal team.

  • In-depth understanding of internal accounting, financial analysis and business principles.

  • Strong working knowledge of contractual practices, and the ability to issue-spot risks related to commercial contracts and sales documents.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in the use of confidential, privileged or sensitive information.

  • Team player with strong business acumen, a penchant for action, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, influencing, organizational and time management skills, with ability to balance priorities, manage and thrive in a complex, global business environment.

  • Detail oriented with ability to step back and view the 'big picture.'

  • Self-starter who can independently manage workload with minimal direction or supervision but can collaboratively work towards a common goal.

  • Maintain effective communication with senior leadership

  • NCMA (CPCM or CCCM), CPM, FAR/DFAR, and/or ITAR/EAR experience a 'plus.'

  • Up to 20% Travel.

Hiring Criteria:

  • Minimum 5-10 years of progressively responsible contracts management and negotiation experience, including good understanding of key legal terms, revenue recognition, SOX and GAAP compliance and general accounting principles.

  • Experience in process improvement and building team consensus across functional areas.
