VHB’s Environmental Resources Group is seeking a part-time (24 hours per week), early-career preservation planner to work with our expanding cultural resources and environmental planning groups. Key responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of cultural resources and environmental-related documents for energy, transportation, planning, and land development projects and state and federal historic tax credit projects. The person who fills this role will also have the opportunity to work with other teams within the Environmental Resources Group, to expand their career development in keeping with VHB’s integrated services approach. The ideal candidate for this role will have an interest and/or experience in a wide range of practices within environmental planning such as social and cultural resources, GIS/mapping, air quality and noise analyses, water quality, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

Assist in conducting cultural resource identification and evaluation surveys for public and private sector clients
Provide technical assistance on cultural resource components of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation and land development projects. Likely tasks will include data entry, preparing graphics, technical writing, and other administrative tasks
Assist in preparing historic tax credit applications for submittal to state and federal review agencies
Support other VHB departments and regional offices with historic preservation planning, site history research, and compliance with the Massachusetts State Register and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
Support the Environmental Resources Group at large with project tasks, such as data collection, fieldwork, research, and document preparation
Skills & Abilities
Self-motivated with attention to details and ability to think critically
Must be able to work independently and as a part of project teams
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to use computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies; Experience with GIS is a plus
A BA/BS degree in Architectural and/or Art History, Historic Preservation, or closely related discipline
1-3 years of professional planning/preservation experience
Experience with building research, and knowledge of architectural styles, forms, and periods of development
Knowledge of American history and architectural history
Experience in digital photography is a plus
Immediate availability to travel for site visits, research trips, and other events when needed
The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have a professional demeanor, strong organizational and communication skills, and possess the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment. The candidate should be able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members and manage tasks as delegated by the project lead.
