responsibilities:

Astellas Institute for Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) is the leader in regenerative medicine, and its programs are at the cutting edge of cell therapy including first-in-human clinical trials for retinal degenerative diseases. Our team has world class experts with over 20 years of experience in the field of stem cell biology and cell therapy development. Translational Science and Development Team is running studies that support programs aimed at treating retinal disorders with cells called "retinal pigment epithelium", or RPE, derived from pluripotent cells. The team is working on improving genomic stability, improvement of donor cells survival and biological function after transplantation, and discovery of biomarkers for better assessment of disease progression and safety of the donor cells. The team collaborates cross-functionally with colleagues in the Research Department including Japan, Medical and Regulatory departments, and externally with academia. The team is very diverse and inclusive, and the work environment supports and encourages scientific curiosity, independent thinking, innovation, intelligent risk taking, challenging the status quo (including but not limited to currently accepted biological concepts).

This role will support translational science projects aimed at discovery of biomarkers and optimization of donor cell performance. The intern will assist with assessment of cell behavior in ex vivo and in vitro 3D cell culture models, donor cell behavior in non-clinical models, and with analysis of biological molecules in biospecimens for identification of biomarkers. The responsibilities will include assisting with in vivo studies, tissue harvest and processing, immunostaining of cells and tissue sections, RNA extraction, flow cytometry, ELISA, image acquisition and analysis (for both in vivo and in vitro studies), cell culture.

The intern will contribute to assessment of cell behavior in ex vivo and 3D in vitro micro-physiological cell culture systems, development of 3D cell culture models and non-invasive assays of cell function (ELISA, Luminex, etc.), image-based donor cell post-transplantation fate assessment in non-clinical models, and discovery of biomarkers. The activities will include hands-on experiments using immunostaining, ELISA, Luminex, QPCR, image acquisition and analysis, data analysis. The primary responsibilities will be bench work and data analysis/organization but may also include contributions to presentations and reports.

  • gain basic understanding of ocular and RPE cell biology, pluripotent cells, and their differentiation to various cell types

  • learn about regenerative medicine and challenges of cell therapy product development

  • get exposure to different aspects of preclinical drug development including manufacturing process, preclinical studies, quality control, biomarker discovery, regulatory requirements, assay, and process development

  • get mentored on and learn through peer interactions and exposure to Astellas Quality Culture approach how to approach biological questions and challenges, design experiments with proper controls, avoid bias in data analysis, maintain high standards of data quality, prepare efficient presentations and technical reports.

qualifications:

  • Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in life sciences with a minimum GPA of 3.3

  • Must have an interest in pursuing a career in Life Sciences/Biotech/Pharmaceuticals

  • Ability to manage workload effectively including planning, organizing, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines

  • familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and analytical methods such as cell culture, antibody-based analysis (immunostaining, etc.), PCR, RNA isolation, microscopy

  • scientific curiosity and knowledge of cell biology principles

  • excellent communication skills

  • must be able to occasionally work on weekends and off-hours

  • familiarity with pluripotent cells, retinal biology, statistical analysis and/or proficiency with cell culture is preferred
