Job Description:
The L3Harris Imaging Division in Wilmington, MA designs and manufactures unique, cutting edge solutions (cool stuff) for space. This site is an industry leader in the design and production of space based mechanisms, telescopes, and payloads for small satellites in both the commercial and non-commercial markets to solve some of the toughest space based challenges out there. One of these products delivered supported NASA’s New Horizon mission. The Telescope that Imaging in Wilmington produced for this mission and it took the first close up pictures of Pluto ever (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/images/index.html). That spacecraft with that telescope is currently beyond our solar system, one of only 5 man made objects to be in deep space.
This team is looking to add a senior manufacturing engineer who is creative and loves to solve tough problems through both the development and manufacturing phases of our programs. This role will play a strong part and touch on leadership at times throughout the lifecycle of our space programs.
Leads and mentors teams in the design of manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts with respect to the design, build and test of spaceflight hardware. Works directly with technicians to supervise and troubleshoot cutting edge opto-mechanical assemblies for a variety of customers. Collaborates with the Engineering function on material and processes that will enhance Design for Manufacturability and Test (DFMAT). Develops, implements and studies manufacturing engineering plans and projects related to the fabrication of reflective mirrors, structural assemblies, and mechanisms. Candidate should have a general knowledge optical hardware, electrical assemblies, structural bonding, contamination control, process layout and procedure writing. Develops manufacturing strategies for specific products and processes. Participates in engineering project teams to coordinate the release of new products. Estimates and tracks manufacturing costs, initiates Continuous Improvement activities. Maintains records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing operations. Investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.
Essential Functions:
Lead and execute manufacturing engineering activities for the assembly and integration of a variety of opto-mechanical and electrical assemblies
Propose and lead process improvement projects.
Lead elements of the manufacturing process including of development of manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts with respect to the design, build and test of spaceflight hardware
Estimates and tracks manufacturing costs, initiates Continuous Improvement activities.
Interface with and direct technicians and other operations personnel.
Collaborate with our design engineers to apply DFMAT, APQP, and Lean manufacturing strategies starting at the design of hardware through build and delivery
Support design engineering, analysis, program management and IPT leads, process development, and proposal activities.
Create and deliver presentations for Peer Reviews, Manufacturing Readiness Reviews, internal management reviews, and customer reviews.
Provide capacity planning and lab space layout support for new programs.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience of graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, 8 years of prior Manufacturing experience in Space Mechanisms Assembly & Integration.
Preferred Additional Skills:
Experience with optical or electrical engineering.
Gage, Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T) experience.
Evidence of strong problem-solving capability, people skills, and the ability to conduct presentations for various internal/external customers.
Security clearance desired, but not required.
Lean (Green Belt, Black Belt) certification.
CAD training (Solid Works/AutoCAD).
Knowledge of program and project management techniques and tools.
Familiarity with AS9100/ISO9001 industry standards.
Fabrication of reflectors, lenses, electrical assemblies, opto/mechanical alignment.
