Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by performing the dual role of Medical Technologist (or Cyto Technology) and staff supervisor. This leadership position ensures that assigned laboratory employees/areas are in compliance with applicable regulations and to quality levels in their efforts to perform laboratory tests. As a member of the Hospital’s leadership team provides day-to-day supervision to guide staff toward achieving the Hospital’s success factor goals and their associated initiatives and participates in direct patient care regularly. This leadership will also impact employee satisfaction by making Winchester Hospital an employer of choice and on patient care by performing accurate tests as prescribed by the physician in a timely manner so clinicians receive accurate result expediently enabling them to provide the best possible care.

Job Description:

QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

  • Required: Associate’s degree in a science field required or grandfathered qualifications.Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

  • Grandfathered Qualifications (A or B):

A. 2-year science degree and evidence of working experience in a clinical setting prior to 1980.

B. MLT Certification (HEW or military) acquired prior to 1980

Experience :

Required: At least three years experience as a Medical Technologist, with demonstrated expertise in at least one of the assigned bench areas.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS

  • Required: Medical Technologist registry eligible

  • Preferred: Medical Technologist registered (ASCP or applicable)

JOB FUNCTIONS

As part of the laboratory team this position functions in the dual capacity of supervisor and lab technologist, taking on non-supervisory functions regularly:

Supervisor

  • Oversees and directs the day-to-day laboratory operations in the assigned areas/benches to ensure the employees are providing our patients with the most effective, efficient, safe, timely and patient-centered services possible.

  • Acts as the Liaison between staff and management and keeps management informed of operational issues.

  • Follows the chain of command to resolve concerns, addressing the short term issue and recommending and/or working towards long-term resolution and improvements with ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­laboratory leadership team.

  • Under the direction of the Manager/Director passes along communications to assist staff members in understanding their contribution to achieving department and Hospital goals.

  • Under the direction of Manager/Director educates staff on the status of the department. Creates the link between operations and budget saving/efficiency opportunities.

  • Recognizes that employees are the key to the Hospital’s success:

  • Builds and maintains a staffing plan in the scheduling system that is fair, efficient and fiscally prudent. Makes recommendations concerning optimum short and long-term staffing for the department.

  • Participates in the candidate selection process. Properly orients and coaches staff so they can be successful in their jobs and within the Winchester Hospital culture.

  • Precepts and mentors staff so to expand their knowledge and competence in department operations and processes.

  • Provides ongoing performance feedback to employees to effectively coach for optimum short and long-term performance, including but not limited to, completing comprehensive, accurate, and on-time performance evaluations.

  • Recognizes staff and requests rewards for outstanding performance/contributions. Individualizes approaches to motivate and recognize staff.

  • Together with the Manager and Human Resources disciplines staff, when appropriate.

  • Attempts to resolve employee relations and employee-physician issues. Keeps the Manager informed of such issues.

  • Monitors practices to optimize staff safety.

  • Assists in developing, implementing, and enforcing clear and concise department policies and procedures to ensure the safe, efficient operations of the department that are in compliance with current regulatory issues pertinent to the department’s clinical issues and operations, which may include but are not limited to, CAP, The Joint Commission, Department of Public Health, Department of Labor, OSHA and the Massachusetts and local Building Code oversight.

Laboratory Technologist

  • Prepares specimen depending on lab order

  • Performs tests using both/either manual methods or automated instrumentation which require fine motor coordination and manual dexterity. Ensures specimen integrity throughout the process.

  • Performs quality control checks and equipment maintenance, adhering to high quality standards.

  • Responds to supply and equipment issues timely to ensure optimum operations and equipment quality and long-term equipment maintenance and life.

  • Reviews and inputs quality control and patient results into the electronic medical records system in a timely manner so clinicians and patients get their results as quickly a possible. Expedites results to clinicians for stat and critical results.

  • Performs necessary calibrations on new and expired lots of reagents

  • Troubleshoot test anomalies and system problems in a logical manner to ensure accurate tests.

  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment presenting a professional impression of facilities and fostering our culture of safety.

  • Maintain documentation, reports and quality checks to ensure the laboratory is in compliance with regulatory agencies, accreditation and Hospital policies and procedures.

  • Runs report to verify optimal operational performance.

  • Takes status and result requests and other questions from patients and clinicians in a timely and professional manner.

  • Provides clinical guidance and training to hospital clinicians and physicians on Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Reviews supplies inventory, communicates supply needs and rotates supplies when new stocking is received.
