Marine Biological Laboratory Animal Care Assistant TEMPORARY in Woods Hole, Massachusetts
Description
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of MRS and under the direction of the Aquatic Animal Care Technicians, the individual will assist in the daily operations of the marine life support operation in the Marine Resources Center. This position will assist in a wide range of duties within the MBL, including specimen care, cleaning, culturing, and collection. The dates of this position are May 27, 2025, through August 29, 2025. Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate school schedules.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, care and feeding of marine organisms maintained in the facility, installing and cleaning seawater tanks and associated systems, seawater filtration equipment, seawater pumps pipelines and alarm systems.
Duties also include the interpretation of water chemistry data and adjusting filtration systems to maintain optimal water quality.
The position includes opportunities to assist in field collection of marine species, supporting educational tours to the public, and interacting with investigators and students.
Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Partial weekend hours and shared holiday coverage are a requirement of this position ie. 4 hours each weekend day about once per month and one holiday.
SKILLS REQUIRED: The candidate must have basic knowledge of marine organisms and their requirements, as well as basic knowledge and experience with handling and husbandry of marine organisms.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Preference will be given to applicants with two years undergraduate study in the field of biological or marine sciences. Preference will also be given to applicants with prior experience working with live marine organisms either in a laboratory or aquarium environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The working environment for this position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs, bend, work in tight places, and on ladders at low heights. Must have ability to physically withstand constant exposure to domestic fresh water and seawater, disinfecting chemicals, and marine animals and materials.OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and drug test are required.
