State of Massachusetts Civil Engineer IV - Bridge Senior Design/Review Engineer in Worcester, Massachusetts

Duties and Responsibilities The incumbent of this position performs the function of a Bridge Reviewer for Highway Division, District 3. * Oversees the design development process for all MassDOT bridge projects in Highway - District 3 and is responsible for the review and approval of the Preliminary Structure Report; Bridge Type Selection Worksheet; the Sketch Plans; and the final Plans, Specifications and Estimate documents. * Ensures that the individual bridge project delivery schedule timeframes as posted in ProjectInfo and determined by the Project Manager are met and keeps Supervisors informed of any major issues/problems relevant to the review of a project. * Ensures that projects are design in accordance with the MassDOT Bridge Manual, AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications, MassDOT Construction Standards, and the MassDOT Standard Specifications for Highways and Bridges. * Prepares and/or reviews plans, specifications, and cost estimates for engineering projects such as multi-lane projects in a suburban or urban setting or multi-span bridges of unique design. * Ensures that the design of each assigned bridge is approved prior to the project advertising date. * Coordinates reviews with the Geotechnical Unit, Hydraulic Unit, and the Highway - District Four Bridge Section. * Responsible for processing Requests for Information (RFI's) during the bidding process of a bridge project and processing Requests for Change and RFIs once the project has been advertised. * Responsible for ensuring that revisions to contract plans are made in accordance with the MassDOT Bridge Manual and that the revisions are distributed appropriately. * Attends all meetings pertaining to a Highway - District Four bridge project whether in person or by videoconferencing. * Maintains and updates the design status of Highway - District Four bridge projects in both ProjectInfo and the Bridge Inventory 4D data bases. * Evaluates the Consultant performance during the Bridge Type Selection Worksheet process, the Sketch Plan process, and the PS&E phases of a bridge project. This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period. Applicants must have at least (A) five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, of which (B) at least three years must have been in a professional capacity, and (C) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience, and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate’s degree with a major in civil engineeringor civil engineering technologymay be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* II. A Bachelor’s degree with a major in civil engineeringor civil engineering technologymay be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineeringmay be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.* *NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines, such as construction, survey, hydraulics, design, transportation, structural, soils, sanitary, environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials. *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
