This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for the New England District Civil Practice Area Leader (PAL) who can work out of our Boston, MA, Rocky Hill, CT Worcester, MA and Providence, RI offices. This person leads business development, project delivery and technical excellence for the civil\highway engineering discipline throughout New England. The PAL for Civil & Highway Engineering will have responsibility for all WSP civil\highway staff located in New England (approx. 40 people). The Practice Area Leader works with the local office civil leads to train and develop the civil\highway staff, provide technical guidance and monitor\balance the workload. The PAL is responsible for a diverse range of operational and business development activities that support the overall positioning of the company and contribute to achieving the region's annual business goals. The PAL's activities will have both internal and external elements. The external responsibilities will include developing and managing key client relationships, gathering and disseminating market/pursuit intelligence, building the pursuit pipeline across all transportation market sectors, and maintaining a strong brand image within the industry. Key performance indicators include EBITDA, Organic Growth, DSO, Utilization, Backlog, Inclusion & Diversity and Guiding Principles.

Your Impact

Role & Responsibilities:

• Business Development

o Represent the firm in the transportation market through involvement in client and industry events and associations to promote intelligence gathering and pipeline development

o Develop new business leads through a variety of means, including research, client contacts, engagement in active projects, and networking with other consultants and business associations

o Develop strategic alliances and project partners to secure new work

o As directed by the District Transportation Business Line Leader, lead strategic project pursuits

o Establish and strengthen client relations for the business unit's strategic clients, regularly meet with key clients

o Actively explore cross-selling opportunities for all WSP business lines

• Business Management

o Responsible for the management, growth and development of the Civil/Highway team. This includes mentoring, providing career guidance, identifying training needs, and supporting the activities of WSP's young professionals group (the Developing Professionals Network).

o Monitor the performance of the projects the civil/highway staff are leading or responsible for.

o Provide focus, direction and leadership of the civil/highway staff on the business objectives of the District, partnering closely with the District leadership team, other Practice Area Leaders and Local Business Leaders

o Create growth strategies for the District and follow up on growth related actions

o Assess and direct work sharing among staff in the District to meet delivery needs with clients and projects

• Client Management & Project Delivery

o Duties include serving in project management roles, especially for key projects, and/or senior technical roles to support other projects. Project involvement may be in any of the business lines of WSP.

o Responsible for strengthening and expanding the relationships with the major client base in the District and monitor client satisfaction on each of the projects that civil staff is involved with

o Participate in client audits and issue resolution

o Provide direction of the civil\highway project managers and task leaders within the District as required to ensure successful delivery of projects

o Responsible for the on time, on budget and bottom-line delivery of the portfolio of projects that are being led by civil\highway PM's within the District

o Interface with staff from a range of other disciplines (traffic, planning, structural, geotechnical, rail & transit, etc.) to support a diverse range of project types, which may be in any of the business lines

o Drive continuous improvement of quality and implementation of the latest technology and industry advancements

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• 15+ years of relevant work experience in civil\highway engineering, including experience supervising staff and managing large multi-discipline projects and subconsultants

• Experienced design manager for design-build projects

• Bachelor of Science in civil engineering required, or equivalent degree required

• Professional registration (PE) is required - New England state PE is desirable

• Experience serving as the project manager on large multi-discipline projects

• Experience leading design of highway/roadway geometric design, interchange and intersection design, roadway plan production, drainage design, signage, maintenance of traffic and staging plans, etc. for traditional design-bid-build delivery and alternative delivery projects

• Experience and good working knowledge of Autodesk or Bentley roadway 3D design software

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of the design standards and protocols of the New England state DOTs

• Good understanding of the NEPA environmental process and state and local permitting process in New England
