Position Information: Seasonal Ranger I Regatta Point State Park 5/5/24-10/26/24 About the Department of Conservation and Recreation: The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails, golf courses and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for a Ranger I position at the State House. Duties: -Educates visitors to DCR properties of rules and regulations; promotes compliance and enforce rules and regulations and issue non-criminal citations when necessary; issues non-criminal parking citations for infractions on DCR properties and tow vehicles when necessary -Encourages safe and appropriate use of DCR property while patrolling throughout the reservation in order to protect the DCR’s natural and cultural resources and ensure public safety at those resource- -Supervises and participates in all ranger activities, initiatives and programs for the protection of natural and cultural resources -Assesses the condition of trails, roads, gates, signage, and other cultural resources; assesses impact of visitors upon natural resources; submits reports and plans which propose strategies for restorations, improvements and/or policy changes to the appropriate individuals. Maintains certain trail markings; maintains records on visitor use; and monitors permits for special use of public lands -Respond to incidents as a first responder, notify and coordinate with law enforcement when necessary, complete an incident report on all public safety related incidents. -Report criminal activity to the appropriate law enforcement agency and liaise with law enforcement regarding the investigation -Administers first aid to visitors and employees in the capacity of a first responder, notifying the local EMS department for response when necessary. -Assists with the design and create displays, brochures, flyers and other public literature and maintain bulletin and map boards. -Assists with the prevention, suppression and control of fires on DCR property -Prepares and conducts tours, workshops, presentations and programs on natural and cultural history and environmental features for the general public, school groups and special interest groups -Participates in search and rescue operations by interviewing others regarding lost persons and searching for lost persons in accordance with agency policy; assists in the search function as duties assigned -Performs related duties such as maintaining logs, reports, vehicles -Represents the DCR at meetings with other agencies and outside entities Specific to State House Duties -Patrols the State House and adjacent areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to ensure the security of buildings and grounds, to protect the natural and cultural environment and ensure visitor safety -Performs entry access screening of visitors and items entering the building, by operating security equipment such as magnetometers and x-ray machines; check identification cards of employees entering the building -Controls crowds in areas where large groups of people gather by cautioning observers and by placing barriers, ropes, etc. in order to maintain public order; guards against trespass, theft, damage to property or injury to individuals, confronts situations that may require the expulsion of disorderly persons from the area and the notification of appropriate law enforcement officials -Issues non-criminal parking citations for infractions and tow vehicles when necessary for all roads within DCR jurisdiction contiguous to the State House -Performs related duties such as maintaining records and files, maintaining logs, preparing reports, supervising seasonal rangers and notifying designated personnel of emergencies -Enforce State House building rules, as determined by the ‘Joint Committee on Rules’ -Enforce ‘restricted area’ policies for vehicles and personnel -Perform the function of a dispatcher for the DCR in State House Base and operate all related equipment -Divert vehicular traffic or pedestrians, when necessary, to avoid congestion or promote safety and convenience -Monitor all communication equipment issued and respond to incidents -Perform other related duties as assigned First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in park or resource management, environmental education, water resources or water supply management, or natural/cultural history interpretation or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation may be substituted for the required experience.* Education towards such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Special Requirements: 1. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license. 2. Possession of a current and valid CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) certificate from the American Red Cross or the American heart Association. 3.
